Glossary of Terms


Application

An application is a program that you design, build, or otherwise modify so that it does what you want it to. We design programs, while you design applications.

Application ID

This is the number that Business Manager assigns to each phone application. Each application has its own unique Application ID number.

Application Variant

This is a copy of a phone application. The variant has the same properties as the original application.

Button

A Button is anything that appears raised in relation to the surface of the Program Window. Buttons are typically square or rectangular. You "press" a button when you click on it with the mouse.

Caller

Someone calling into the system. They may call in to use the applications that you provide.

Center Owner

You, the purchaser of this and other CBSI programs and applications. Perhaps you also purchased an entire computer system from CBSI.

Chaining

This is a feature that allows you to link one CBSI Phone application to another.

Clipboard

This is a temporary storage area in Windows. In the context of this application, you may copy speech files to the Clipboard so that you may edit them.

Committing

This is the act of saving the information in an Application Schedule so you can use the committed schedule. You also commit changes to a system tree, and to phone line configurations.

Copy

To 'Copy' is to make a duplicate of something. Within the desired application, you would first select an object (or objects) to copy and then select the "Copy" option from a menu or with a Short Cut Key. The copied item then transfers to the Paste Buffer.

Customer Number

This is the number that CBSI assigns to you. If you need supplies, technical support, or any other assistance, the person you talk to at CBSI will ask you for this number. This makes it easier for them to understand your situation, and to decide how best to serve you.

Cut

To 'Cut' is to remove something from an area of the screen. You first select an object (or objects) to cut and then select the "Cut" option from a menu or with a Short Cut Key. The item disappears from its previous location, then transfers to the Paste Buffer.

Daily Schedule

This is the displayed schedule for the chosen day. Using the "Day of the Week" buttons, you can view the daily schedule for any day of the week.

Debug

This is computerese for 'fix'. This usually involves interpreting information that an application produces to find the source of the problem, or 'bug'.

Default

Any preset or preselected item, control, or field. Most commonly, the default setting of a control is the normal or recommended setting.

Delete

To 'Delete' is to remove something and then discard it. Unlike the 'Cut' function, a copy is not placed on the Paste Buffer. Generally, a Delete is permanent.

Dialing Prefix

This is a number or series of numbers that you press before you dial the phone number. Some businesses have dialing prefixes that you must enter to get an outside line.

Dialing Suffix

This is a number or series of numbers that you press after you dial the phone number. Some businesses have dialing suffixes that they use for call tracking and billing purposes.

Frequency Distribution

How often a unique event occurs. The information on the Telephone Activity Report is based on this idea.

Global Settings

These are settings for controls that affect the workings of all of your phone applications.

Hard Disk Drive

The area inside your computer that stores information, such as your applications and programs.

Highlight

To 'Highlight' is to show that you intend to perform an operation on an item, perhaps a Cut or Copy, or edit. Highlighting is also called 'selecting' when you choose an item in a menu or an object in the tree. Within Windows, an item or text is highlighted when it appears as light colored text on a dark background.

Icon

An Icon is a graphic representation of an application in Windows. The icon is typically composed of a small picture along with the name of the application below it.

Jumper

This is a small block on the voice/telephone card that allows you to change the workings of the card.

Local Launch

This is a test of an application in which you act as the caller, using your local phone. This is helpful when testing a phone application's system tree.

Local Phone

The phone that is connected to your computer. It is this phone that you use to record your system speeches. Also, callers may use this phone number when calling into your system.

Loop Current

This is a measure of current that allows Business Manager to detect when a caller or called party hangs up.

Mailbox

This tree object appears in the Voice Mail and Parent Teacher Hotline applications. Its primary purpose is to hold the messages that callers leave for the owner of the Mailbox.

Menu Bar

This contains a list of menu headings. Clicking on a menu heading displays the menu corresponding to the selected menu heading. The menu options relate to the menu heading they fall under.

Message-recording Tree Objects

These are tree objects that allow a caller to leave a message. These tree objects store the left messages. The only tree objects that record and store messages are Mailboxes and Question Headers.

Object ID Number

A number used to identify tree objects in the tree. The ID number of an object is the sum of all touch tones a caller would press to get to that object from the Initial Prompt.

On-Line Help

This means you can get help with the program as you are using it. Help give you useful pointers, and can provide you with the information to help you perform a task (or get you out of a sticky situation).

Paste

To 'Paste' is to move something from the Paste Buffer to the screen. Typically, you paste the item at the current cursor position or currently selected object.

Paste buffer

A temporary storage area for objects cut from the system tree. The paste buffer stores the objects so you can paste them into another part of the tree.

Phone Activity Log

This is a group of activity entries that your computer stores. Each time a phone application performs an activity, the activity is stored as an entry in the Phone Activity Log. This Log is the source of all of the information that may appear on the Telephone Activity Report.

Phone Applications

These are applications that you use in conjunction with your phone and a voice/telephone card inside your computer. Callers call in to use some phone applications' services, while you use other phone applications to dial out to listeners.

Phone cord

This is the actual wire that you use to connect your voice/telephone card to the phone line. You also use a phone cord to connect your phone to the voice/telephone card.

Phone jack

This is the physical 'outlet' in your wall that houses the phone line. You connect the voice/telephone card to the phone jack using a phone cord.

Phone line

This is the actual line and number that people use to call into your system, and your system uses to call people. Each phone line has its own unique phone number to identify it, and is accessible through a phone jack.

Port

A port is a special type of phone jack in the back of the voice/telephone card. You connect the phone cord to your system through the phone jack.

Port number

This is the number assigned to the port in the VBX card. Once phone lines are connected to the ports in your VBX card, each line is associated with a port number so your system can identify the line.

Program window

The 'Program window' is the area that a particular application appears in and controls.

Prune

To 'Prune' is to delete or remove an item or section from the system tree. Unlike the 'Cut' function, a copy is not placed in the Paste Buffer. Generally, Pruning is permanent.

Purge

This is the act of deleting or removing Phone Activity Log entries from your computer.

Report Generator

The part of the Business Manager program that makes and prints Telephone Activity Reports. You set the controls on the Report Generator box to determine how the Report Generator presents the information.

Rotary group

This is an option offered by the phone company that allows you to associate multiple phone lines with the same application. If you use a rotary group service, then you must manually configure at least two of your phone lines due to the operation of the rotary group.

Schedule Grid

This is the area of the Application schedule in which you insert the applications to run. Each space in the grid represents one hour of run time, beginning with 6 A.M. and ending with 5 A.M..

Short-Cut Key

A 'Short-Cut Key' is a single key or key combination that selects or performs an operation without using the mouse.

Software

The actual applications that install on your computer. If 'Hardware' is the brain, then 'Software' is the thoughts that the brain is thinking.

Speech

A verbal message, recorded on an object in a phone application. A Speech may tell you to do something, or just provide information.

System

Your computer, while running a phone application.

System Editor

The Combination Application System Editor allows you to modify the way that your Combination Application works. This is where you design, build, and edit your Combination Application system.

System Tree

When we say 'Tree' or 'System Tree', we're referring to the structure of your phone applications as they appear in the System Editor. As a tree has branches, so does the structure of your phone applications.

Telephone Activity Report

This is a report that you print to analyze the activity on your phone lines. This allows you to see how and when callers use your phone applications.

Tool button ribbon

This is a vertical display of buttons that allow you to edit and modify the tree. These buttons correspond to menu commands located under the menu headings on the menu bar.

Tree object - Control Point

A Control Point appears as a small pink rectangle with a "C" on it. Control Points allow you to perform special functions. Its primary function is to 'chain' to another CBSI Phone Application. This means that you may access part of another application through the Combination Application system tree.

Tree object - Initial Prompt

This tree object appears as a small red folder, located directly under the System Greeting. Normally, you record instructions for callers using the system, onto this object, as well as a menu of options. This tree object is a permanent object in the tree.

Tree object - Mailbox

This tree object appears in the Voice Mail and Parent Teacher Hotline applications. Its primary purpose is to hold the messages that callers leave for the owner of the Mailbox.

Tree object - Question Header

This tree object appears in the Inbound Telenotification and Outbound Telenotification applications. Its primary purpose is to store the caller's or called party's responses to a question set.

Tree object - System Greeting

This object appears in the tree in the upper left corner of the Work area (it's that small blue rectangle with an "S" on it). This is the first object in the tree that callers reach when they call into the system. The System Greeting usually contains a speech that welcomes the caller to the system. This is a permanent object in the tree.

Tree objects

The basic units that appear in the system tree. They may do everything from housing commands and speeches to enabling functions and features.

Trial-and-error Method

This is a method of learning in which you experiment with the things you are learning. If you make a mistake, you correct it and learn from it.

Two-line coupler

This is a device that allows you to split a dual-line phone cord into its two separate lines. This is so you can connect the lines to the phone jacks.

User Defined Report

This is a Telephone Activity Report format that you save, so you can print a report in the same format without having to set the controls on the Report Generator box.

Voice/telephone card

This is the card that goes in your computer. It allows your system to handle incoming and outgoing calls. It is also referred to as a 'VBX card'.

VOX

This means 'voice' or 'voice recording'. In the context of the program, "Begin VOX" means 'begin voice recording', and "End VOX" means 'end voice recording'.

Work area

This portion in the System Editor program window displays the existing tree structure for your Combination Application.
